Metaverse access, equality & diversity start with manners; Jane Gauntlett & Andrew Somerville

Season 2, Episode 8 - Jane Gauntlett & Andrew Somerville

What happens when you ask renowned XR creative directors and storytellers to think critically about their work and medium? You get a lot of thoughtful questions in return and will likely hear a few new perspectives you’ve never considered. At least that’s what Nathan C encountered when they sat down with Jane Gauntlett (janegauntlett.com) & Andrew Somerville (www.andrewsomerville.com).

XR creatives play two crucial roles in the development of a robust metaverse. As early adopters of spatial computing tools, their artistic expressions help define what is possible—testing the limits of AR & VR to tell stories and bend reality.

They also ensure that crucial questions (about experience, access, equality, and diversity, and so much more) are asked as part of XR creation. ā€œWhat does the technology add that isn’t already there for us?ā€ Andrew Somerville challenges when Nathan C asks about dreams for a future metaverse

Since their work begins in creative values and a careful exploration of the human experience, XR creatives help to counterbalance tech-first exuberance with careful reflections about the true reach and impact their works may have.

ā€œI like the idea that we have a future of human rights, access, and diversity — and I think manners is a good starting point,ā€ Jane Guantlett notes, highlighting how our social standards for interaction carry-over to how we engage with technology. Later she insists that our standards for interacting with the world around us, needs to be ā€œbaked inā€ to the technology and experiences that we’re building.

We hope you enjoy this tiny snippet from our lengthy and inspired conversation with these curious explorers and tellers of immersive interactive stories.
