Metaverse of wellbeing, values, equity & social responsibility | Bobby Torres on The AR Minute

Season 2 | Episode 13

While Chief Relationship Officer, Bobby Torres, has been helping clients build augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications and games for most of the last decade, his vision for the metaverse starts with some basic UX questions.

(Honestly, this is not what we expected from someone in a sales and business development role. But knowing the impact that values-driven organizations can have—we approve.)

“What are the customers’ (the end users’) goals? How do we ensure users have equitable access to new technology? Are the tools and technologies we are making supporting our values and the wellbeing of our customers? How can we include play in everything we do?”

For Bobby and the team at 302 Interactive (302interactive.com) this playful approach may have started with their roots in video game design, but it has become an organizing principle for nearly everything they do. Play is both a business strategy and a tool for building healthier relationships with our world and the technology that pervades every aspect of it.

Built on Dr. Stuart Brown’s premise that “play is the opposite of depression,” Torres looks to push back against some of the dark patterns of ‘attention capitalism’ — using play as a guide to building XR applications and experiences that help rise above the systems of today. (And they’ll even say “no” when business ideas encroach on their values and design principles—not an easy thing to do in an emerging industry.)

Special thanks to our Season Two series sponsor, Augmented World Expo (AWE), for creating an environment where “XR business thrives,” ideas flow freely, and the global community comes together to push this industry forward.

Since 2010, over 5,000 XR companies and 60,000 professionals have come together at AWE events to learn from the brightest industry minds, to experience cutting-edge technologies first-hand, to challenge each other with crucial conversations, and to build the connections that drive a diverse and vibrant community and ecosystem.
