Season 2, Episode 6
Nicole Lazzaro, President & Founder XEODesign, is serious about fun. In fact she’s built her career studying and building engaging digital experiences at the bleeding-edge of technology. This world-renowned game developer and designer pioneered measuring emotions on players' faces as they played games.

The outcome of this research – the 4 Keys to Fun – is the foundation for some of your favorite game experiences (like The Sims) and helps companies increase engagement by adding fun to everything they do. We could, and should, do a whole series on the 4 Keys of Fun and play in the metaverse — this ep. barely scrapes the surface.

The 4 Keys to Fun:

Easy Fun: Novelty. Curiosity from exploring new worlds, escape, stories, or simply goofing off.
Hard Fun: Challenge. Fiero, the feeling of the epic win, from overcoming obstacles in pursuit of a goal.
People Fun: Friendship. Amusement from cooperation and competition with friends.
Serious Fun: Meaning. Excitement to relax, learn, grow, and change how people think, feel, and behave

Decades of designing digital experiences give Nicole a unique perspective about the dark patterns and pitfalls of “attention capitalism” and business models built on consumer data and surveillance.

This deep understanding of today’s digital challenges doesn’t dissuade her about the possibilities of the metaverse and Web3—if we’re building new realities, our culture and business models are bound to be disrupted with new models that we could have never imagined. We so enjoyed her radical optimism here.

By staying focused on those experiences that enhance human experience and connection—and keeping fun in everything we do—we can create a metaverse reality that evolves our business models and much more.
