"Communities, not corporations, should lead content and social moderation in the metaverse." The people who are in social VR spaces everyday understand the are simply better equipped to identify and moderate harassing behavior, than the large corporations and platforms who may not have the full picture of whatās at stake.
Lance sees that the foundations for community and safety in the metaverse both start with clear expectations and a little practice using the tools. As such, Powell advocates for a clear onboarding that introduces not just the VR technology, but also the rules and the reporting mechanisms. So when harassment happens, participants already know what to do.
Despite his familiarity with the dark parts of the metaverse, Powell remains optimistic about a future where XR tools enhance our days in a myriad of way.
"XR technologies will be a fantastic supplement to a wide array of the things we already do...like education, social lives, romantic lives, and even business." We love how thinking about XR as a supplemental experience, rather than one replacing our current "reality," AR and VR become easier concepts to consider in our daily lives and this allows us to focus on moments of value and connection in a more meaningful way.
